The new equipment used for screening checked baggage that should be installed at most airports by December 31, will damage undeveloped film. All undeveloped film should be removed from checked baggage and put in carry-on baggage to avoid damage.

The X-ray machine at the passenger security checkpoint will not affect undeveloped film under ASA/ISO 800. However, multiple X-ray inspections (more than 5 times) of the same roll of undeveloped film may cause damage.

Travelers with especially sensitive film, such as professional grade, medical or scientific films, or film that will be specially processed should also remove them from carry-on baggage at the passenger security checkpoint and ask for a hand inspection. To speed the screening process pack film in clear canisters, or place film in clear plastic bags. Lead lined bags, while they may be useful in foreign airports, are not recommended as they will also need to be hand inspected.

The machines used to screen checked baggage or carry-on baggage will not affect digital camera images or film that has already been processed, slides, photo compact discs, or picture discs.
