Scenes like this one that have high-contrast may be exposed properly if the two extreme tones average out to something near 18% grey (what your camera deems to be an "average tone" and therefore a "correct exposure"). In this case, though, the stuffed animal is exposed pretty well, but it was mostly due to luck -"Full Auto" isn't dependable in these situations.
