These bricks were brought to San Juan from Europe as balast in the ships, but at that time they were not blue as you see them in this picture. They were used to pave the streets, and after years of weathering in San Juan something turned them blue. The same thing has not happened to similar bricks in Europe. It's not known what caused them to turn color here in Puerto Rico.
