“because of the large 82mm filter thread, UV/Protect and polarising filters for this lens are relatively expensive. By the way, there seemed to be some variety in the quality of these lenses: I had to return several before I got one I was happy with.”
“When the lens focusses via AF, the rubber focus ring actually turns (unlike many other lenses where the AF motion is internal). You need to make sure you're not touching the ring or the AF motor will have to strain and struggle.”
“The lens extends slightly at each end of its zoom range, with 24mm being where it's shortest. It's only a small amount of extension.”
“One of my main issues with this lens was that it was quite soft when wide-open. It was good when stopped down to f/8 or so, but I had to be careful to avoid f/2.8 most of the time. ”
“Towards the end of my time with this lens I noticed more and more how often it was affected by flare. While I tried to avoid having the sun in the frame, any time the front element was lit by the sun there was a slight decrease in contrast across most of the image (and yes, I did keep the front element clean). ”
“Especially at 17mm, there is significant barrel-distortion. That is, straight lines near the edges of the image will appear to bend outwards in the middle. Care must be taken when composing landscapes with “straight” horizons (running the horizon through the centre of the frame helps, but often results in a boring composition)”
“this lens does not report focus distance to the camera. This is not important in that it will not directly affect your photography, but the digital cameras will record the focus distance if the camera reports it”
“This lens definitely seems to be at the bottom of the pack, especially compared to the more recent lenses. Even so, it's capable of reasonable results when used appropriately.”

“Overall I was very happy with it, the tiny little problem it is a very fragile lens (like most of Sigma lenses), and it needs a very special treatment.” (He was talking about an older version of this lens, but 2 people referred to Sigma's fagility…

“My only issue with this lens is that if the light is very low, it focuses very slow. ”
“it is best to use it at f5.6, 8 or higher to give the corners better sharpness.”
“I notice a slight purple CA even at f8 at 17mm in some instances. But you have to blow up the picture to 100% to see it and you have to really be looking for it. It's there, but it's not obvious for smaller prints. The CA is gone at longer focal lengths.”
“At the corners of my DSLR cropped photo, at 17mm, I notice very slight purple chromatic abberation with this Tamron wide zoom. It is more than acceptable though and visible only when the photo is blown up on the computer. Essentially when photographing leaves on a tree against a sky, the purple fringing is almost invisible. It becomes apparent if the photo is enlarged down to the level where pixels are visible on the screen.”
“I've done professional 8×10 inch prints from this Tamron 17-35mm lens and the purple fringing was not visible there. I suspect doing something like 16×20 inch print would allow the viewer to notice it.”
“When shooting with the sun in the frame, this lens flares horribly. Not only flare and ghosting is large, but also I get that bright spot in the middle of the flare coming from the sun.”
“a little soft at 35 and the edges”
-
“The front element does not rotate so using a polarizer is no issue.”
“The focus ring rotates in AF mode which is a little dated by today's standards.”
“The slightly noisy, conventional AF drive is pretty fast thanks to an IF (internal focusing) system.”
“It is a little embarrassing but at the time the lens was tested among numerous other lenses and we forgot to obtain the distortion figures - sorry for that. Concluding from the other (rectangle) test charts I'd say that the lens generates the typical amount of barrel distortions at 17mm whereas at 24mm and 35mm there're very little distortions.”
“The center performance is very good to even excellent at all focal lengths and throughout all tested aperture settings.”
“Unfortunately the borders aren't quite as impressive. Generally you should avoid the max. aperture setting where the borders tend to be rather soft. One stop down the border quality reaches a good level increasing furth to good to very good results at f/8 and f/11.” (And this is on an APS camera!)
“There's a slight decrease in quality towards the long end of the zoom range.”
“Typical for many wide to ultra-wide lenses chromatic aberrations (color shadows at harsh contrast transitions) are quite pronounced with this lens exceeding 1 pixel on the average at the image borders.”

“This is the lens I finally replaced my old Sigma 17-35mm with, and I must say it's a very impressive lens.”
“It's sharp even at f/4, so now I only have to consider DOF when stopping down, not lens performance.”
-
Very positive review although it compares it to another more expensive lens I'm not considering. Still, it did very well against the other lens, surpassing it in sharpness and contrast in some cases.
