Don't wear cotton socks, they soak up sweat and result in blisters
(Advanced Backpacking, A Trailside Guide -by Berger)
Year wool blend socks with extra padding at the toes and heel (ankle high) with liner socks made of polypropolene (also known as polyolefin, it draws moisture away from skin). For a (week-long trip?) pack 1 or 2 pair of heavy socks and liner socks for each day.
(Backpacking Primer, Lori Saldanas)
Wear liners of polyester/nylon or spandex/polyester with heavy socks of some combination of acrylic, wool, and stretch nylon.
Heavy socks should be padded at the heel and ball of foot
